This story is so fascinating.  I would love to meet your aunt.  She sounds like a really interesting lady.  We all need to listen more to the old folks, and write their stories down.  So much information is dying with our older generation.  My father who actually knew Eugenie Martel Brunet, (who would have been Theophile's half sister) his grandmother, now has ALZ. and can't remember too much.   He is 87 years old, and I question him often because you can never tell what memories are going to be close to the surface that day.

My husband, my cousin Betty, and I try to get over to Opelousas about once a year to work on our genealogy.  Next time we go we will be more insistent that they let us look in the  judges' chambers for the photo of B A. Martel.  We have asked several times while we were there, and we have always been told that it was not there.

Did you know that the Martel family came to St. Martinville from the Isle of St. Domingue (Haiti)?  We have found the line back to around the year 1722, and then we ran into an impasse.  It has been very frustrating.

Take Care,
Leslie Ellis
